George Bush's Grandfather Planned Fascist Coup in 1933

I stumbled onto a link today that brought me to the webpage of a BBC Radio series called Document. The link brought me to what I believe is the most recent program which investigates a planned coup of the US government by George Bush's grandfather among others in 1933.

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (the owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell House, as well as Prescott Bush) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression.

July 25th, It Started With Harris

I read an interesting editorial in the Toronto Star on Friday that attempted to put the current city budget crisis into a wider context.
The article basically makes the assertion that Mike Harris's provincial income tax cuts during the 90s and subsequent downloading of provincial responsibilities onto municipal governments led to the strain on city finances we are now seeing come to a head.

July 25th, No Help From Provincial Government

An article in the Toronto Star today reveals that neither Dalton McGuinty nor John Tory have any intention of promising increased funding for Toronto as part of either of their election campaigns. Both maintain that any new funding will hinge on the findings of a provincial panel assessing municipal-provincial relations. The report is due out in February, conveniently after the provincial election.
